Paumanok was founded in 1983, when Ursula and Charles Massoud planted vines on a former potato farm in Aquebogue, on the North Fork of Long Island. Ursula grew up in a winemaking family in Germany’s Pfalz; Charles came from a hospitality family in Lebanon. They were turned down six times before landing the original 42 acres.
Four decades on, the estate spans 127 acres and is still run by the family. Their eldest son Kareem is winemaker, Nabeel manages the vineyards, and Salim runs the business side. In 2018 the family bought neighboring Palmer Vineyards, after 35 years as its neighbor.
The estate is certified by Long Island Sustainable Winegrowing and has run on 100% solar power since 2017. Paumanok was an early adopter of screw caps and released its first no-sulfite-added wines in 2015. Its wines have been poured at the White House and have won New York Winery of the Year and the Governor’s Cup.
