The house

Unionville's home vineyard is an 88.7 acre farm that was once part of the largest peach orchard in the United States. The land was split off as a dowry present when one of the original owner's daughters married in 1856, and the main house and the oldest section of the winery building went up in 1858.

The ground carries a lot of American history. George Washington led troops across much of this area and camped nearby on land that now grows some of the estate's vines; just south of here he crossed the Delaware. After a rust blight destroyed Hunterdon County's peach industry following the Civil War, the orchards converted to apples, and in 1900 the farm was sold and became a dairy.

The first vines went in at Unionville Home in 1987, French-American hybrids like Chambourcin and Vidal Blanc. In 1995 the hill above the property was planted to vinifera: Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling. The team now farms and sources from six vineyards across three New Jersey counties, and hand-harvests everything.

What Vesper is

A tasting room Unionville Vineyards can open from the cellar.

Vesper is live video and a checkout in the same window. Independent wineries broadcast from where the wine is actually made, talk through what is in the glass, and sell it direct without you leaving the stream. Most bottles worth knowing about never reach a shelf near you. This is how you meet them, and the people who made them, anyway.

  1. 1
    Follow, and get the call

Following Unionville Vineyards means a notification the moment they switch the camera on. Tastings are announced here, not buried in an email list.

  2. 2
    Watch and ask

The winemaker pours what is in front of them and talks through it. Chat is open, so the thing you actually wanted to know gets answered on camera.

  3. 3
    Buy direct, mid-pour

The wines being poured are purchasable on the spot. Unionville Vineyards is the seller of record and ships the order themselves. Vesper only earns a commission when a bottle sells.
