Tablas Creek was founded in 1989 as a partnership between the Perrin family of Château de Beaucastel in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and American importer Robert Haas, who brought cuttings of classic Rhône grape varieties to the limestone hills of west Paso Robles.
Today the estate is farmed as the world's first Regenerative Organic Certified® vineyard, with sheep, llamas, and alpacas grazing between the vines. Its Esprit de Tablas blends show what Rhône varieties can achieve on California's Central Coast.

The one rock they crossed California for
Burgundy, Chablis, Sancerre, Bordeaux and Châteauneuf-du-Pape all sit on calcareous limestone. In California it barely exists. Tablas Creek spent years hunting for it before planting a single vine, because that crumbly clay soaks up winter rain and gives it back through the summer. It is why they can dry farm on 28 inches a year.
The block they planted on its own roots
Grafting onto American rootstock is the only reason the California industry survived phylloxera. In 1994 Tablas Creek planted two acres of Mourvèdre on its own roots anyway. Thirty-two years later those vines are in better shape than the grafted ones around them, so they planted a new own-rooted block on purpose.
