Jennifer and Ross Halleck planted their first vines on Burnside Road in Sebastopol in 1993, with a plan that had nothing to do with starting a winery. The block was meant to be a college fund for their three sons. The fruit turned out to be better than the plan.
In 2002 a Halleck Vineyard Pinot Noir was named the best Pinot Noir in the United States, which settled the question of whether this was a side project. The estate sits in west Sonoma County between the Sonoma Coast and Santa Rosa, in the fog corridor that makes the region difficult to farm and worth farming anyway.
The family is still on the labels. The Three Sons Cuvée is named for the boys the vineyard was planted for, and the Little Sister Sauvignon Blanc for the one who came after. Ross hosts virtual tastings himself, shipping the bottles ahead and walking guests through them from home.
