In 1987 Cathy Corison began buying Cabernet Sauvignon from prime benchland vineyards between Rutherford and St. Helena, intent on making powerful and elegant wine that speaks of place. Those well-drained alluvial soils have produced balanced, age-worthy wine since the late 19th century. In her early years, in her own words, everything was done with smoke and mirrors: purchased fruit and borrowed space in other people's wineries.
Her husband William Martin led the search for a home, and in 1995 they bought Kronos Vineyard. Planted in 1971 on St. George rootstock, it is one of the last old Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards left in the Napa Valley. In 1999 they broke ground on the Victorian-style winery barn William designed. Sunbasket, a second estate vineyard a stone's throw away, was bought in 2015 after they had sourced from it for more than 25 years.
Corison is a small family farm, certified organic and Napa Green. Cathy and William's daughters returned to work at the winery in 2020: Grace full-time as Cathy's assistant winemaker, Rose part-time across harvest, bottling and the books.
